How did Lift Off Strength come into being?
After graduating college I had worked in office settings. I’d been pouring time and energy into my work and was finding myself extremely unrewarded. So in the Winter of 2013, I decided to quit my job, take a sabbatical, and teach CrossFit classes at a gym downtown. It was an eye-opening experience in which I got to connect deeply with people and be of service to adults wanting to change their habits. Early into that experience, I decided I would open my own “CrossFit” style gym. In November of 2014, we opened the doors of CrossFit Encino and the rest is history.
What is your role at Lift Off Strength?
My role as gym owner has adapted over the years but these days I focus mainly on educating and improving our training team; running our nutrition program; and working one on one with anyone interested in committing to a complete lifestyle transformation.
How did you get into Fitness?
I’ve always been more interested in being a generally healthy human being than in athletics or fitness. Although I dabbled in different sports in high school I never played competitively. In college, I dove deep into nutrition and found the “Paleo” community and from there was pulled into the CrossFit community. I loved the “team” element of the training – even more than that I loved that the CrossFit gym was a safe place for me to test my fitness and have a coach to challenge me and guide me. Since then I’ve been fully immersed in fitness – taken it far beyond CrossFit – and am extremely passionate about fitness as a preventative health mechanism.
What kind of Fitness goals do you have?
Just like everything else, fitness goals have evolved over time for me. In 2017 I got into doing endurance hiking and completed Mount Whitney as well as Skyline-Cactus to Clouds each in one day. Since then I’ve decided to test my overall fitness by seeing if I can manage to maintain a 500lb Deadlift while also being able to complete a 42-mile ultra marathon in the grand canyon. My main goal is to be able to challenge myself physically without getting injured.
What has been the most challenging thing you’ve accomplished?
Deciding to quit my job and make a 180-degree life shift in 2013 is one of my proudest accomplishments… I was sick, tired, and unhappy… Pressuring myself to pursue a career that did not feel rewarding.
It has taken me 4 years – 2013-2017 – to really feel comfortable and confident that I made the correct decision. Hard work both physically and mentally but at this point, I feel so passionately about what I do that I never feel like I “work”.
If you could workout with ANYONE…who would it be and why?
I get to workout with my amazing staff and clients every day. I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I love every one of them and they inspire me each and every time I see them in the gym.
If you could have dinner with 3 people, any lifetime, who and why?
Tony Robbins – this man changed my life and inspired me to do anything in my power to change peoples lives for the better.
Michael Gervais – Michael Gervais is a sports psychologist working for the Seattle Seahawks. He is one of the best interviewers I’ve ever met and shares the message of helping people orient themselves around habits of excellence. I would love to have him audit what we do as a gym and help us pivot to improve in any way we can.
Tony Horton – Tony Horton was the founder of P90x. P90x was hugely influential on my fitness journey. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the program which made health and fitness available to SO many people. He is an inspiring man who’s been through many challenges and puts a very “human” face on training and trainers.
What is your favorite quote and/or motto…one that you live by?
“The way you do ONE thing is the way you do EVERYthing.” – My work has taught me that it’s all about consistency and the fundamentals. We show ourselves we have integrity when we do even the simplest of things as though we are trying to do our best job.
How has Lift Off Strength changed your life?
The process of opening up and the people at this gym have transformed me in so many ways I could not list them. They inspire me to live a life of integrity, commit deeply to the people and causes that are important to me, and teach me daily that I should always be striving towards excellence. And there is just no more supportive and inspiring group of people than the family at Lift Off Strength.
